Research Project
THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN IN-COMMON IN THE ARTISTIC RESIDENCIES OF PINA BAUSCH
Marcelo de Andrade Pereira – Universidade Federal de Santa Maria – UFSM, Brasil
Abstract: The research project entitled The construction of an in-common in the artistic residencies of Pina Bausch intends to make a rigorous reflection on Pina Bausch's creative process – in particular, of the pieces staged through artistic residencies – relating it to philosophical issues, such as the relationship between art and the construction of a common space, as well as the coexistence and sharing between the singular and the plural. The project intends to discuss, based on data collection at the University of Hamburg and the Pina Bausch Foundation, a set of theoretical and poetic elements that will allow researchers to better understand the construction of a space for sharing and collaboration between individuals in the realm of art. The main objective of this research project is to advance the theoretical studies about Pina Bausch, which may enable the development of new research approaches to the renowned German artist and to dance-theatre creation processes, as well as to analyse the poeticpedagogical character of the artistic residencies regarding the construction of a common space for interaction. The main question of this research project is: how to create and dwell in a common space from a space of passage, migration, movement or visitation? How can passing by – like Pina and her dancers passed by the cities in question – coincide with dwelling? Based on the philosophy of Martin Heidegger and Giorgio Agamben it’s assumed that the artistic residencies developed by Pina and her ensemble in many different territories, enabled artists to move subjectively through places, spaces and histories, following trails that led them toward an Other, which builds bridges between a supposed self, a place of origin and an Other, taken in the same way as an origin. Considering this, it’s also assumed that
artistic residencies establish themselves as spaces for encounter between different ways of being in the world, empowering the artist with an immersive space for experimentation with and provocations in their own bodies, the body of others, structures, meanings and stories. To this extent, it’s possible to affirm that the relationships established between artists suggest different orders, different ways of understanding the dimension of the body and its being/doing in the world.
